Falling INN to a plan
I remember the moment well. Adam was out front building a trailer, I was peddling around in the house, and the kids were away with Grandma when it hit me. Why the heck aren’t we spending more time exploring this world!? At this point we were only into this whole Covid scare about a week, with plans of implementing a two week isolation… that was six months ago! I figured we would be well back to normalcy by fall, so why not line up a long expedition for the family. Like always, I did my research, sent out a few emails, and casually mentioned the idea to my more conscientious husband. As I was pleading my case to him, which seemed crazy at the time because of his firm career and our well planted roots, my phone rang. It was a lovely lady, Shelley, calling to discuss the possibility of renting us her lakeside cabin in Montana… for a month… in September/October… and it sounded like an opportunity that we simply couldn’t turn down.
As homeowners ourselves, we knew that a lot of creativity would need to go into making this plan work. Who would take care of our house? Was it feasible to pay our mortgage plus someone elses for a month? What would school look like for the kids? How would we work from the road? Little did we know that God already had that all under control, and that by fast forwarding several months, this plan would fall in the absolute perfect timing.
When assessing our assets to cultivate the best laid out action plan, I knew that our house had to play a roll. A long term renter, perhaps? Renting our backyard out for smaller weddings, maybe? The answer hit us hard and fast, and it felt perfect. Airbnb!!! We ourselves have loved experiencing new escapes through the well laid out platform, and thought we’d give it a try. Two weeks and a whole lot of blood, sweat and tears later, our rental site was live! And it was HOT! We filled up the first few trial nights right away, and found the benefits to be many! Not only has this option opened up the gift of travel for our family, but it also is a great way to bring in a whole lot of extra income by using something that otherwise, would be our largest expense.
More on this whole process in a future post, but if you’re looking for a great place to stay in the gateway to Oregon’s adventure scene, check out our place here.
And so it began, Adam & Kari; parents, business owners, Innkeepers. And we’ve loved EVERY minute!
